SOUTH EAST UK

Welcome to XR West Sussex

You are invited to join us - Everyone, and every part of everyone, is welcome!

It is time to act. We use people power to demand urgent action from our Government.

Conventional approaches of voting, lobbying, petitions and protest have failed because powerful political and economic interests prevent change. Our strategy is therefore one of non-violent, disruptive civil disobedience – a rebellion.

Historical evidence shows that we only need the involvement of 3.5% of the population to force change – in the UK that’s about 2 million people.

Our meetings are the perfect first step to finding out more. Look for a Local Group near you and go to their social media for meeting dates or to send them an email. If you don't have a local group near you and are thinking of starting one, are interested in volunteering or would like to get in touch more generally, email [email protected]

Online

This is a 4 week part-time programme for people new to XR which aims to give you a thorough grounding in who we are and how we work.

Find where in XR you best ‘fit’ and become ready to move straight into a role with one of our amazing teams anywhere across the movement. You'll receive support, personal connections, a solid understanding of our work and all the tools you need for a flying start!

This programme will be useful for anyone starting out in XR, whether you have already joined a group or are looking for one.

You don’t need any experience of XR, just a can-do attitude, a good internet connection and a minimum of 8 hours per week.

The programme consists of (with approximate time commitments):

- Zoom trainings (2 hrs/week)
- Selected reading and e-learning to check your understanding (2-3 hrs/week)
- A personal mentor to guide you (1 hr/week)
- Sit-ins on team meetings (1 hr/week)
- A weekly get-together with your fellow students (1 hr/week)

In your application message please tell us:
- A bit about you, your skills, interests and whether you have any existing XR experience
- If there are any hours of the day or days of the week you can't make for meetings etc (e.g. I work full time so can't make Mon-Fri 9-5).
- Whereabouts you live (town, region/nation)

We're working to make XR UK a diverse and inclusive space and we welcome applications from everyone.
(If you have less time to spare, or prefer less training, you can apply for one of our lower time-commitment advertised roles directly or go to extinctionrebellion.uk/join-us/ for other ways to join XR.)

The climate and ecological crisis is worse than we feared, and the future is more uncertain than ever. The time to act is now… so let’s get prepared! 🔐

Come along to our Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) workshop, where you will learn about the history of Civil Disobedience, theories of Non-Violence, and various NVDA skills such as how to talk to the police, how to block a road, and how to use your support systems.

This workshop takes 3hrs, and includes 2 x 15 minute breaks – please arrive on time! There will be lots of information to learn, and chances to engage interactively with this information – it’s a good idea to bring a pen and paper. 📝

No prior knowledge is needed.
There is a lot of information to learn in this, and we will be signposting other trainings throughout – the key workshops we want you to go to as part of our ‘Road to Rebellion’ are the Know Your Rights trainings, and the Affinity Group Formation Workshops (more information about these will be discussed in the workshop itself).

This training takes place twice a month, from 10am till 1pm.

We watch a TED video together then have facilitated discussion questions in small groups

Some days, it feels like the only thing we can agree on is that we can't agree -- on anything. Drawing on her background as a world debate champion, Julia Dhar offers three techniques to reshape the way we talk to each other so we can start disagreeing productively and finding common ground -- over family dinners, during work meetings and in our national conversations.
